Introduced in 1993 as a 1994 model, the bold highway truck inspired Ram pick-up took the light truck market by storm. Dodge faithful finally had a truck as good looking as it was tough while those who had never thought to purchase a Dodge product before flocked into showrooms. It was a giant success, selling over 200,000 units in its first year compared to 70,000 the year previous - peaking at 350,000 with the addition of the Club Cab. Eight years after its inception the all-new Ram 1500 is here and it's better than ever before. Let's find out how good it is.
How does it look? It would be hard to make as dramatic an entrance with the new 2002 model as the original did in 1993. The new model is more evolutionary than revolutionary, yet still makes a powerful statement all its own. Dodge's trademark grille has grown even taller, achieved by raising and crowning the hood while incorporating a cut-out in the front bumper. To offset the usual negative aerodynamic characteristics of a larger grille, the windscreen is canted 5 degrees rearward to improve airflow. All remaining body surfaces have been made smoother as well, giving the Ram a more refined appearance.
What's it like inside? It's quiet. The doors shut with a solid thunk, more reminiscent of a European luxury car than a domestic truck. It's also the roomiest passenger compartment in its class, especially in 4-door guise. The rear seats fold 60/40 when three's a crowd or when a secure dry storage area is needed. The quality of plastics and general fit and finish has improved as well. Wealthy farmers and hedonistic truck lovers alike will be glad the new Ram can be equipped to luxury car standards including power adjustable foot pedals, especially appreciated by height challenged drivers.
How does it haul? Due to the addition of the rear doors, the 4-door reduces box size from 6'6" to 6'3". Rather than just increasing overall size Dodge felt its half-ton customers would sooner like parking it in their garage. To make room for full sheets of plywood and other bulky items the tailgate can be lowered and an extension added on. Fortunately payload is not affected by the reduction in box size.
Does it go? The 215-hp 3.7-L V6 in the base Ram is adequate for normal driving conditions yet most will opt for the 235-hp 4.7-L V8. It not only pulls like a big block, but sounds like a 60's musclecar. An optional 5.9-L V8 with 245-hp and 335 lb-ft of torque is probably the best choice if you plan on towing heavy weights, in this case up to 3,924 kg (8,650 lbs). The all-new 45RFE 4-speed automatic with overdrive is seamless in operation connecting to either a fully automatic dash-mounted push-button or traditional floor-mounted shifter operated four-wheel drive system.
Does it handle well? It's no surprise that an independent front suspension and standard 17" wheels make a big difference when cornering, but that's not the entire story. Its hydraformed frame allows for reduced welds, increasing strength while reducing weight. This added stiffness makes a major difference when the straight roads get twisty. Also, the Ram uses rack-and-pinion steering rather than a recirculating ball system, giving more direct response. For ultimate performance optional 20" alloy wheels enhance the driving experience while giving the Ram a hot custom look.
How safe is it? Athletic handling helps the Ram to avoid accidents as does the standard rear ABS system mated to 4-wheel discs - largest in class. A 4-wheel ABS system is optional. Also, for the first time in the light truck class, optional side-curtain airbags for both front and rear outboard occupants join the standard dual-phase front bags and five lap/shoulder belts. Front seatbelt pretentioners use pyrotechnics to tighten in the event of collision.
The new Dodge Ram 1500 does everything it needs to and then some. It's roomier, quieter, faster, better handling and safer than the truck it replaces. Sounds like a successful combination.
